Developing and refining ideas

GCSE Art and Design revision notes, key terms and practice questions.

Developing ideas

  • Development means moving your ideas forward, step by step, from your starting point towards a final piece.
  • Respond to artists, try new compositions, change the scale, crop images, and combine ideas.
  • Each piece of work should grow out of the one before, and your annotation should explain the links.

Refining work

  • Refining means improving work through review and experiment: trying a different technique, colour scheme or composition, and choosing the best.
  • Reflect on what's working: ask a teacher or friend for feedback, and be willing to change direction.
  • Show refinement in your sketchbook with trial pieces and compositional studies.

Keeping it personal

  • Choose subjects that interest you and link to your own experiences, surroundings or culture, such as Guernsey's coastline or your family.
  • A personal, meaningful response scores highly in AO4.
