Planning and making a final piece

GCSE Art and Design revision notes, key terms and practice questions.

Planning a final piece

  • The final piece is your personal response that realises your intentions (AO4). It should grow naturally from your development work.
  • Plan it with compositional studies, colour trials and material tests.
  • Choose the size, media and composition that best express your ideas.

Making it

  • Break the work into stages and plan your time, especially for the 10-hour ESA session.
  • Prepare materials in advance, and practise any difficult techniques first.
  • Keep checking the work against your plans, and adapt if something better emerges.

Presenting and evaluating

  • Present the final piece neatly, with your preparatory work showing the journey.
  • Evaluate the outcome: how well it meets your intentions, its strengths, and what you'd do differently.
