Grammar: the present tense

KS3 Spanish revision notes, key terms and practice questions.

Subject pronouns

  • yo (I), tú (you, to one friend), él (he), ella (she), usted (you, polite), nosotros / nosotras (we), vosotros / vosotras (you, to several friends, in Spain), ellos / ellas (they), ustedes (you, to several people politely, or in Latin America).
  • Spanish often leaves out the pronoun, because the verb ending shows who is doing the action: hablo means I speak.

Regular verbs

  • -ar verbs: hablar: hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, habláis, hablan.
  • -er verbs: comer: como, comes, come, comemos, coméis, comen.
  • -ir verbs: vivir: vivo, vives, vive, vivimos, vivís, viven.

Key irregular verbs

  • ser (to be): soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son. estar (to be, for location and feelings): estoy, estás, está, estamos, estáis, están.
  • tener (to have): tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, tienen.
  • ir (to go): voy, vas, va, vamos, vais, van. hacer (to do or make): hago, haces, hace…

Negatives and questions

  • Put no before the verb: no juego (I don't play).
  • Questions start with ¿ and end with ?: ¿Te gusta el deporte? (do you like sport?)
  • Question words: ¿Dónde? (where), ¿Cuándo? (when), ¿Por qué? (why), ¿Quién? (who), ¿Cómo? (how), ¿Cuánto? (how much), ¿Qué? (what).
