Grammar: past and future tenses

KS3 Spanish revision notes, key terms and practice questions.

The near future

  • Use ir a + infinitive: voy a jugar (I'm going to play), va a comer (he's going to eat), vamos a visitar (we're going to visit).
  • Time phrases: mañana (tomorrow), el fin de semana que viene (next weekend), el año que viene (next year).

The preterite (past)

  • -ar verbs end in -é for "I": jugué (I played), visité (I visited), hablé (I spoke).
  • -er and -ir verbs end in -í: comí (I ate), bebí (I drank), salí (I went out).
  • Some are irregular: fui (I went, or I was), hice (I did), vi (I saw), tuve (I had).

Time phrases and opinions

  • ayer (yesterday), el fin de semana pasado (last weekend), el año pasado (last year).
  • Opinions in the past: fue genial (it was great), fue divertido (it was fun), fue aburrido (it was boring).
  • Negatives: no jugué (I didn't play), no voy a jugar (I'm not going to play).
