Regular verbs
Take -en off the infinitive and add the endings. spielen (to play): ich spiele, du spielst, er/sie/es spielt, wir spielen, ihr spielt, sie/Sie spielen.
wohnen, machen, hören, kaufen and lernen all follow this pattern.
du is for a friend or family member; Sie (with a capital S) is the polite "you" for adults you don't know.
Irregular verbs
Some verbs change their vowel in the du and er/sie/es forms: fahren → du fährst, er fährt; essen → du isst, er isst; lesen → du liest, er liest; sehen → du siehst, er sieht; sprechen → er spricht.
haben: ich habe, du hast, er hat, wir haben, ihr habt, sie haben.
sein: ich bin, du bist, er ist, wir sind, ihr seid, sie sind.
Word order and negatives
The verb is the second idea: Heute spiele ich Tennis.
After weil, the verb goes to the end: …, weil ich müde bin.
nicht means not: Ich spiele nicht. kein means no or not a, before a noun: Ich habe keinen Hund.
Modal verbs send the second verb to the end as an infinitive: Ich kann gut schwimmen (I can swim well). Ich muss Hausaufgaben machen (I must do homework).
