GCSE Spanish revision notes, key terms and practice questions.

School

  • Subjects: las matemáticas, el inglés, el español, las ciencias, la historia, la geografía, la informática (computing), el dibujo (art), la educación física (PE), la música, la tecnología.
  • Opinions: mi asignatura favorita es… (my favourite subject is…), se me dan bien / mal las ciencias (I'm good / bad at science), el profesor es estricto / simpático, me gusta el inglés porque es útil (useful).
  • School life: el instituto (secondary school), el comedor (canteen), el recreo (break), los deberes (homework), el horario (timetable), las notas (marks), los exámenes.
  • Rules: hay que llevar uniforme (you have to wear a uniform), está prohibido + infinitive (it's forbidden to), no se puede… (you can't…), no se permite… (…isn't allowed).

Future plans

  • Después de los exámenes… (after the exams…) voy a seguir estudiando (I'm going to carry on studying), voy a hacer el bachillerato (a two-year course, like A levels), quisiera ir a la universidad.
  • hacer un aprendizaje (to do an apprenticeship), tomarse un año sabático (to take a gap year), buscar un trabajo (to look for a job), ganar dinero (to earn money).
  • En el futuro, me gustaría… (in the future, I'd like to…). Mi sueño es… (my dream is…). Espero… (I hope…).

Jobs and work

  • Jobs have masculine and feminine forms: médico / médica (doctor), enfermero / enfermera (nurse), profesor / profesora, camarero / camarera (waiter / waitress), abogado / abogada (lawyer), ingeniero / ingeniera. Jobs ending in -ista don't change: el / la periodista (journalist), el / la dentista.
  • No article before a job after ser: quiero ser médico (I want to be a doctor), mi madre es profesora.
  • las prácticas laborales (work experience), un trabajo a tiempo parcial (a part-time job), el sueldo (pay), bien pagado (well paid), trabajar en equipo (to work in a team), en el extranjero (abroad).

Grammar to use

  • Near future: voy a + infinitive (voy a estudiar). Conditional: me gustaría / quisiera + infinitive (I would like to).
  • Future: estudiaré (I will study), trabajaré (I will work), iré (I will go), seré (I will be), tendré (I will have), haré (I will do), podré (I will be able to).
  • Si + present, then future: si saco buenas notas, iré a la universidad (if I get good marks, I will go to university).
