Grammar: past and future tenses

KS3 French revision notes, key terms and practice questions.

The near future

  • Use aller + infinitive: je vais jouer (I'm going to play), il va manger (he's going to eat), nous allons visiter (we're going to visit).
  • Time phrases: demain (tomorrow), le week-end prochain (next weekend), l'année prochaine (next year).

The perfect tense with avoir

  • Use avoir + past participle: j'ai joué (I played), j'ai mangé (I ate), j'ai regardé (I watched).
  • -er verbs change -er to -é: jouer → joué.
  • Some past participles are irregular: fait (did), vu (saw), bu (drank), lu (read).

The perfect tense with être

  • A few verbs, mostly about movement, use être: je suis allé (I went), je suis resté (I stayed), je suis sorti (I went out).
  • A girl adds -e: je suis allée, je suis restée.
  • Time phrases: hier (yesterday), le week-end dernier (last weekend), l'année dernière (last year).
  • Opinions in the past: c'était génial (it was great), c'était nul (it was rubbish), c'était amusant (it was fun).
