GCSE German revision notes, key terms and practice questions.

Where I live

  • Ich wohne in einer Stadt (in a town or city), in einem Dorf (in a village), auf dem Land (in the countryside), an der Küste (on the coast), in den Bergen or am Stadtrand (on the edge of town).
  • Ich wohne in einem Haus / in einer Wohnung (a flat). In takes the dative for where you are.
  • Es gibt + accusative (there is / are): Es gibt einen Park, ein Einkaufszentrum (a shopping centre), ein Schwimmbad, eine Bibliothek (a library), einen Bahnhof (a train station), ein Rathaus (a town hall), einen Markt, eine Kirche.
  • Es gibt kein Kino (there isn't a cinema). Use keinen, keine or kein to match the noun.
  • Es ist ruhig / lebendig / laut (quiet / lively / noisy). Es gibt nichts für junge Leute (there's nothing for young people).

Directions and describing places

  • Wie komme ich zum Bahnhof? (how do I get to the station?) Gehen Sie geradeaus (go straight on), biegen Sie links / rechts ab (turn left / right), nehmen Sie die erste Straße (take the first street).
  • in der Nähe von (near), weit von (far from), gegenüber (opposite), neben (next to), zwischen (between).
  • Früher gab es… (there used to be…), aber jetzt gibt es… (but now there is…).

The environment

  • die Umwelt (the environment), die Umweltverschmutzung (pollution), die Erderwärmung (global warming), der Klimawandel (climate change), der Müll (rubbish), die Verpackung (packaging), das Plastik, der Treibhauseffekt (the greenhouse effect), die Dürre (drought), die Überschwemmungen (floods).
  • Um die Umwelt zu schützen… (to protect the environment…) trenne ich den Müll (I sort the rubbish for recycling), recycle ich Papier und Glas, mache ich das Licht aus (I switch off the light), dusche ich, statt zu baden (I shower instead of having a bath), benutze ich öffentliche Verkehrsmittel (public transport).
  • Energie / Wasser sparen (to save energy / water), verschwenden (to waste), erneuerbare Energien (renewable energy).

Grammar to use

  • Man sollte + infinitive at the end (we should): Man sollte mehr recyceln.
  • Wir müssen + infinitive (we must): Wir müssen die Umwelt schützen.
  • Wenn + present, then future: Wenn wir recyceln, werden wir die Umwelt schützen (if we recycle, we will protect the environment).
  • Wenn + conditional: Wenn ich Bürgermeister wäre, würde ich mehr Radwege bauen (if I were mayor, I would build more cycle paths).
  • After an um… zu clause at the start, the main verb comes next: Um Energie zu sparen, mache ich das Licht aus.
