Education, work and future plans

GCSE German revision notes, key terms and practice questions.

School

  • Subjects: Mathe, Deutsch, Englisch, Naturwissenschaften (science), Biologie, Chemie, Physik, Geschichte (history), Erdkunde (geography), Informatik (computing), Kunst (art), Sport (PE), Musik, Religion.
  • Opinions: Mein Lieblingsfach ist… (my favourite subject is…), ich bin gut / schlecht in Mathe (I'm good / bad at maths), der Lehrer ist streng / nett (the teacher is strict / nice), ich finde Chemie schwierig / einfach / nützlich (hard / easy / useful).
  • School life: die Grundschule (primary school), das Gymnasium (academic secondary school), die Gesamtschule (comprehensive school), die Pause (break), die Hausaufgaben (homework), der Stundenplan (timetable), die Noten (marks).
  • Rules: Man muss pünktlich sein (you must be on time), man darf nicht… (you're not allowed to…), es ist verboten, … zu + infinitive (it's forbidden to…). Most German pupils don't wear a uniform.

Future plans

  • Nach der Schule… (after school…) mache ich die Oberstufe (sixth form) / das Abitur (exams at 18, like A levels). Ich möchte studieren (study at university).
  • eine Ausbildung machen (to do an apprenticeship or vocational training), ein Jahr Pause machen (to take a gap year), einen Job finden (to find a job), Geld verdienen (to earn money).
  • In der Zukunft möchte ich… (in the future I'd like to…). Mein Traum ist es, … zu + infinitive (my dream is to…). Ich hoffe, … zu + infinitive (I hope to…).

Jobs and work

  • Jobs have a masculine form and a feminine form ending in -in: Lehrer / Lehrerin (teacher), Arzt / Ärztin (doctor), Krankenpfleger / Krankenpflegerin (nurse), Polizist / Polizistin (police officer), Ingenieur / Ingenieurin, Verkäufer / Verkäuferin (shop assistant).
  • No article before a job: Ich möchte Arzt werden (I would like to become a doctor). Meine Mutter ist Lehrerin.
  • das Praktikum (work experience), der Nebenjob (a part-time job), das Gehalt (salary), gut bezahlt (well paid), im Team arbeiten (to work in a team), im Ausland (abroad).

Grammar to use

  • Modal verbs send the infinitive to the end: Ich möchte Medizin studieren. Ich will im Ausland arbeiten.
  • Werden + infinitive makes the future: Ich werde auf die Uni gehen. On its own, werden means "to become": Ich möchte Arzt werden.
  • Wenn sends its verb to the end, then the next verb comes straight after the comma: Wenn ich gute Noten bekomme, werde ich studieren.
  • Bekommen means to get or receive. It never means "become".
