Where I live

J'habite dans une ville (in a town or city), dans un village, à la campagne (in the countryside), au bord de la mer (at the seaside), à la montagne or en banlieue (in the suburbs).
J'habite dans une maison / un appartement (a flat).
Il y a… (there is / are…) un parc, un centre commercial (a shopping centre), une piscine, une bibliothèque (a library), une gare (a train station), une mairie (a town hall), un marché, une église.
Il n'y a pas de cinéma (there isn't a cinema): un and une become de after a negative.
C'est tranquille / animé (it's quiet / lively). Le problème, c'est qu'il n'y a rien pour les jeunes (the problem is there's nothing for young people).

Pour aller à la gare, s'il vous plaît? (how do I get to the station, please?) Allez tout droit (go straight on), tournez à gauche / à droite (turn left / right), prenez la première rue (take the first street).
près de (near), loin de (far from), en face de (opposite), à côté de (next to), entre (between).
Avant, il y avait… (before, there used to be…) mais maintenant il y a… (but now there is…).

la pollution, le réchauffement climatique (global warming), le changement climatique (climate change), les déchets (rubbish), les emballages (packaging), le plastique, l'effet de serre (the greenhouse effect), la sécheresse (drought), les inondations (floods).
To protect the environment: je recycle le papier et le verre (glass), j'éteins la lumière (I switch off the light), je prends une douche au lieu d'un bain (a shower instead of a bath), j'utilise les transports en commun (public transport), je vais au collège à vélo.
économiser l'eau / l'énergie (to save water / energy), gaspiller (to waste), les énergies renouvelables (renewable energy).

On devrait + infinitive (we should): on devrait recycler plus.
Il faut + infinitive (we must): il faut protéger la planète.
Si + present, then future: si on recycle, on protégera la planète (if we recycle, we will protect the planet).
Si + imperfect, then conditional: si j'étais maire, je créerais plus de pistes cyclables (if I were mayor, I would create more cycle lanes).
