GCSE Maths formulae sheet

Every exam board prints the same formulae. The ones marked Higher tier only aren’t on the Foundation sheet.

Perimeter, area and volume

  • Area of a trapezium½ (a + b) ha and b are the parallel sides, h is the perpendicular height between them
  • Volume of a prismarea of cross section × length
  • Circumference of a circle2πr = πdr is the radius, d is the diameter
  • Area of a circleπr²

Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometry

  • Pythagoras’ theorema² + b² = c²in a right-angled triangle, c is the hypotenuse
  • Trigonometrysin A = a⁄c cos A = b⁄c tan A = a⁄bin a right-angled triangle ABC, c is the hypotenuse and a is opposite angle A
  • Sine rulea⁄sin A = b⁄sin B = c⁄sin Cin any triangle ABCHigher tier only
  • Cosine rulea² = b² + c² − 2bc cos AHigher tier only
  • Area of a triangle½ ab sin CHigher tier only

Quadratic formula

  • The solutions of ax² + bx + c = 0 (a ≠ 0)x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ⁄ 2aHigher tier only

Compound interest

  • Total accruedP (1 + r⁄100)ⁿP is the amount at the start, r is the interest rate for each period, n is the number of times it’s compounded

Probability

  • P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A and B)
  • P(A and B) = P(A given B) × P(B)

Not on the sheet: learn these

  • Areas of rectangles, triangles and parallelograms
  • Speed, density and pressure
  • y = mx + c and gradient
  • Percentage change
  • Interior angles: (n − 2) × 180°
  • Spheres, cones and pyramids are given in the question

How to use the sheet in the exam

Questions people ask

Do you get a formula sheet in GCSE Maths?
Yes. For exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027, every GCSE Maths paper comes with a formulae sheet, for every exam board.
Is the volume of a sphere on it?
No. The volumes and surface areas of spheres, cones and pyramids are given in the question when you need them.
