Titration Lab
Run acid from a burette until the indicator changes, drop by drop, then find the mean of the concordant titres.
About this activity
A titration students can repeat as often as they like. They do a rough titration, then two accurate ones, adding acid a drop at a time near the end point. Then they choose the concordant titres, calculate the mean and say why a pipette, swirling and a white tile are used. A Higher tier bonus question calculates the concentration. The first screen says how titration fits the student’s exam board (GCSE Chemistry on AQA, Edexcel and OCR).
How to use Titration Lab
- Titration Lab is a free Chemistry activity for Years 10 to 11 that takes about 15 minutes. Try it on this page on a computer, tablet or phone: there’s nothing to download.
- In a lesson, choose Show on the board to play it together as a class.
- To set it for a class, a teacher shares it and gets a code: students type the 6-digit code at lycolearn.co.uk/join with their first name and the first letter of their surname (no accounts needed), and their scores come back to the teacher.
Students will
- Carry out a titration, slowing down near the end point
- Choose concordant titres and calculate a mean
- Explain the use of a pipette, a burette, swirling and a white tile
- Higher tier: calculate a concentration from a titration
Teaching tips
- Good the lesson before the practical: students arrive knowing why they go drop by drop.
- The bonus concentration question is Higher tier and isn’t counted in the score.
