Physics Equation Trainer

Six exam-style calculations: choose the equation, rearrange it or give the unit, then work out the answer.

About this activity

Each question is worth three marks, like a calculation in the exam: choose the right equation from four, rearrange it (or give the unit), then calculate. It covers speed, acceleration, force, weight, work, power, charge, potential difference, electrical power, density, wave speed and kinetic energy, with different questions and numbers every time. The equations are the same on AQA, Edexcel and OCR, in GCSE Physics and Combined Science.

How to use Physics Equation Trainer

  • Physics Equation Trainer is a free Physics activity for Years 10 to 11 that takes about 15 minutes. Try it on this page on a computer, tablet or phone: there’s nothing to download.
  • In a lesson, choose Show on the board to play it together as a class.
  • To set it for a class, a teacher shares it and gets a code: students type the 6-digit code at lycolearn.co.uk/join with their first name and the first letter of their surname (no accounts needed), and their scores come back to the teacher.

Students will

  • Choose the right equation for a question
  • Rearrange an equation to find what’s asked for
  • Calculate an answer and give its unit

Teaching tips

  • Students get an equation sheet in the exam, so this practises what the marks are really for: choosing, rearranging and units.
  • Play it twice: the second go deals the questions that didn’t come up the first time.
